Frankfurt Airport Is on the Lookout for Dangerous Mosquitoes
At Frankfurt Airport, mosquito control measures have been stepped up following six cases of malaria among employees. Two people died, while four others received treatment and are now out of danger. German experts are investigating whether infected mosquitoes could have entered the country on an international flight.
In Germany, authorities are investigating the possible source of the malaria outbreak at Frankfurt Airport. The leading theory is so-called “airport malaria.” These are rare cases in which infected mosquitoes accidentally enter another country on a plane or in luggage. Experts at the Robert Koch Institute suspect that the carrier may have been a mosquito of the species Anopheles stephensi. This tropical species could have been brought into Germany on one of the international flights.
Efforts are now underway to locate the insects directly at the airport and in the surrounding area. Special traps have already been set up there. Some of the mosquitoes were successfully captured and sent to the laboratory of tropical medicine in Antwerp. Experts must determine the species of the captured insects and try to establish their origin. This will help determine whether an infected mosquito could indeed have reached Frankfurt by plane.
At the same time, authorities are investigating whether preventive measures at the airport were carried out properly. Specifically, this involves the disinfection of airplanes and monitoring areas where mosquitoes might breed. Peter Tinnemann, head of Frankfurt’s health department, speculated that the mosquito that may have been the source of the infection is likely already dead. “It’s probable that this mosquito is no longer alive,” he said.
At the same time, experts are drawing attention to another factor. Due to rising temperatures in Germany, tropical mosquito species may survive longer after entering the country. A large-scale investigation was launched after six cases of tropical malaria were detected among people associated with Frankfurt Airport. Two employees died. Four others are out of danger following treatment.
The situation is drawing particular attention due to the rarity of this mode of transmission. If a person has not traveled to tropical countries, doctors may not immediately suspect malaria. As a result, diagnosis is sometimes delayed. However, Frankfurt authorities emphasize that the risk to city residents remains low. Malaria is not transmitted from person to person through casual contact. “Not everyone should assume that a headache, fever, or nonspecific symptoms mean they have malaria because of the cases at the airport,” Tinnemann noted.
Cases of so-called “airport malaria” in Europe remain very rare. According to a study, 145 cases of airport and luggage malaria were recorded between 1969 and 2024. Nine of these occurred in Germany. A similar case has already occurred at Frankfurt Airport itself. In 2023, malaria was detected in one person with ties to the airport. The patient was successfully treated at that time.
German authorities are currently trying to determine whether a similar scenario has repeated itself this time and whether infected mosquitoes could have reached Frankfurt on an international flight. This is reported by The Guardian.
