Aayalolo buses in Ghana to use counterflow lanes — MyJoyOnline

In Accra, Ghana, buses of the Aayalolo rapid transit system will use dedicated counterflow lanes on three major routes to the city’s central business district. As MyJoyOnline reports, the new arrangement will take effect on Tuesday, September 29, during peak hours.

Routes and operating hours

The scheme will cover the Amasaman–Accra, Adenta–Accra and Kasoa–Accra corridors, where significant congestion is recorded during peak hours. The dedicated lanes will operate from 06:00 to 09:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00.

On certain road sections, traffic arrangements will be temporarily changed so that Aayalolo buses can use special lanes in the priority direction. These lanes will be intended exclusively for authorized BRT system buses.

Restrictions for other transport

Private cars, taxis, trotro vehicles, commercial transport and other unauthorized road users will be prohibited from using the dedicated lanes. Ghana’s Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs said the decision is intended to improve public transport operations, reduce congestion and make trips to and from the central business district more reliable.

Ghana Police’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive and the Department of Urban Roads are involved in implementing the initiative. Police will deploy officers at key points and major intersections along the routes to regulate traffic and monitor compliance with the new arrangement.

The Ghanaian government expects the changes to help Aayalolo buses keep to schedule, reduce travel time and encourage more passengers to use public transport.
