Prison staff in Ghana receive sign language training
The Sekondi Prisons Complex in Ghana held a two-day Ghanaian Sign Language training course for institution staff. The program was intended to improve communication with people with hearing impairments and promote inclusivity in the penitentiary system.
Training participants
Staff from the Ekwasi Camp Prison, Sekondi Central Prison, and Sekondi Female Prison took part in the program. The classes were conducted by a teacher from the Sekondi School for the Deaf, who introduced participants to the basics of Ghanaian Sign Language and fundamental conversational communication skills, MyJoyOnline reports.
Practical sessions
During the practical part, staff learned and demonstrated various signs and conversational expressions to strengthen their skills in effective communication with people with hearing impairments.

Participants said the training gave them practical skills for communicating with prisoners and other people with hearing impairments whom they encounter while carrying out their official duties. The instructor emphasized the importance of sign language for effective communication and inclusivity and said participants would receive certificates at the end of the program.
The program aims to help create a more inclusive and people-sensitive environment in correctional institutions, where communication barriers will not prevent people with disabilities from receiving appropriate services and support.
