Ghana orders restoration of Kpeshie Lagoon ecosystem
In Ghana, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations Stan Xoese Dogbe instructed the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council to begin the ecological restoration of sections of Kpeshie Lagoon in Accra that were cleared of illegal structures.
Restoration after demolition
The instruction was issued after illegal structures were demolished in the protective buffer zone of the wetland. The demolition in the Laboma area was carried out by a flood mitigation task force.
As MyJoyOnline reports, the Forestry Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency will be involved in the work. They are to plant coconut palms and other suitable tree species, as well as introduce environmental measures to restore the vulnerable ecosystem.

Flood protection
Dogbe stressed that the goal of the work is not limited to clearing the area: the cleared sections must be returned to their natural state. According to him, restoring the lagoon will strengthen its capacity to retain floodwaters and reduce the risk of flooding in nearby communities. He also called for measures to prevent the wetland area from being illegally occupied again.
Kpeshie Lagoon is one of Accra's important flood-control infrastructure facilities. Its natural capacity to retain water has declined due to land development, sand filling and construction. After the structures are demolished, authorities plan to remove construction debris, restore vegetation and ensure long-term environmental protection of the area.
