In the Vitosha mountain region near the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, a fatal brown bear attack occurred, resulting in the death of a man who was near a mountain hut where he encountered the animal in the wild.
According to preliminary information, the bear was with its cub and suddenly attacked the man, who tried to defend himself using a stick, but his injuries proved fatal.
Police noted that such incidents are atypical for this region, as there are an estimated 300 to 500 brown bears in the country, primarily in other mountainous areas. “Fatal brown bear attacks in Bulgaria are relatively rare,” local authorities note, emphasizing that the incident in Vitosha was an exception for this area.
Experts add that the animal’s behavior may have been related to protecting its offspring, though final conclusions regarding the circumstances of the tragedy are still being determined.
In Bulgaria, the winners of the parliamentary elections have been granted the right to form a new government, and the mandate to do so has been handed over to Rumen Radev. The politician has previously been the target of international criticism due to statements regarding occupied Crimea. His party won a majority in parliament, which effectively paves the way for the formation of a cabinet.
