In China, a young man died after drinking 1.5 liters of Coca-Cola

In China, a 22-year-old man died after drinking about 1.5 liters of Coca-Cola in just 10 minutes while trying to quench his thirst and cool off during a heat wave.

About six hours after drinking the beverage, the man began to experience severe pain and significant abdominal bloating. He was taken to a hospital in Beijing, where doctors noted that he had a rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure, and rapid breathing.

A CT scan revealed a buildup of gas in the intestinal walls and the portal vein—the blood vessel that carries blood from the digestive organs to the liver. Doctors attributed this to a reduced oxygen supply to the liver and the development of ischemic liver injury, or “shock liver.”

Doctors attempted to remove the gas from the digestive system and stabilize the patient’s condition. However, despite treatment, his condition continued to deteriorate. Approximately 18 hours later, the man died.

Experts cautioned against drawing a definitive conclusion that the death was caused specifically by the carbonated beverage. The gas buildup could have been caused by a bacterial infection, and drinking the Coca-Cola too quickly may have only exacerbated the situation.
