Landfill collapse in Conakry kills at least 30 people
At least 30 people have died after the Dar-es-Salam landfill collapsed in Conakry, the capital of Guinea. According to officials, heavy seasonal rains during the night into Sunday caused a large mound of garbage to collapse, burying nearby homes.
Search operation at the landfill
At least six more people sustained serious injuries. Guinea’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Djenabou Touré, visited the site. Workers used excavators to search for other victims under the debris, Deutsche Welle English reports.

The landfill was to be closed
Authorities had previously ordered the evacuation of residents of informal housing near the landfill over fears of possible collapses. Lieutenant Colonel Balde Mamadou Bailo, a sanitation officer with the Military Engineering Battalion, said that the Dar-es-Salam landfill was planned to be closed on Sunday.
Deutsche Welle noted that heavy seasonal rains had previously caused landfill collapses in other countries as well, including Uganda and Ethiopia.
