A new tunnel used by illegal migrants from Belarus has been discovered in Lithuania

Officers of the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT) discovered an underground tunnel near the village of Latežeris that had been dug from Belarusian territory beneath a physical barrier at a depth of about 1.5 meters. 

Lined with logs and planks, the passage extended 4 meters into Lithuanian territory, and its entrance on the Belarusian side was covered with camouflage netting.

The tunnel had not yet been sealed off or fully completed, so after completing the necessary procedural steps, border guards filled it in with soil. A pre-trial investigation has been launched into the illegal crossing of the state border, which carries penalties ranging from a fine to imprisonment for up to two years.

As a reminder, Lithuanian border guards are recording an increasing number of attempts to smuggle migrants through underground tunnels dug from Belarusian territory. Authorities in Vilnius believe that representatives of the Belarusian regime may be involved in these activities.

Lithuania plans to acquire technology that will help border guards more effectively detect underground tunnels used for illegal border crossings. This was announced by the country’s Minister of the Interior, Martynas Katelinas.
