Lithuania closes airspace near Vilnius over possible drone — YLE News

Lithuania closed the airspace in the area of its capital, Vilnius, following a report of a possible drone sighting. Lithuania's National Crisis Management Centre reported the possible appearance of a drone in the country's airspace. At least one NATO fighter jet was dispatched in response to the report, YLE News reports.

Airport restrictions

Flight tracking service Flightradar24 said on social network X that the airspace around Vilnius was closed due to unidentified objects. Vilnius Airport also said on Facebook that it had temporarily restricted its operations.

Yellow alert level

According to Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT, a yellow-code air alert was declared not only in Vilnius but also in the Trakai and Elektrėnai districts. This level means there is no immediate danger.

A NATO fighter jet took off from Šiauliai in northern Lithuania. The Italian Air Force is currently stationed at this base and takes part in NATO's Baltic air policing mission.
