British police in Liverpool detained two participants in a pro-Palestine rally near the venue of the ruling Labour Party’s annual conference. Anadolu Agency reports that the protest took place on Sunday, September 27.

Rally near the party conference

Demonstrators gathered near the conference venue, with several of them holding homemade signs in support of Palestine Action. This organization is banned by the UK government.

Law enforcement officers initially detained an elderly man who was sitting under a tree. The second detention involved a protest participant holding a sign in support of the banned group.

Organizers’ statement

A representative of Defend Our Juries, which organized the protest, said that the organization had hoped the ban on Palestine Action would be lifted by the new Prime Minister Andy Burnham. According to him, public pressure and the considerable resources required to enforce the ban contribute to this.

Anadolu Agency reports that nearly 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 175,000 injured in Israel’s war in Gaza since 2023. The agency also notes that about 90% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been destroyed. According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, after the ceasefire that took effect in October last year, the Israeli army continued daily attacks: more than 1,400 Palestinians were killed and about 5,000 were injured.

In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.
