A 37-year-old man died in Melbourne after being detained by police at a train station
A 37-year-old man died at Clayton Train Station in southeast Melbourne after being taken into police custody. Police are investigating the circumstances of his death, which occurred shortly after he was taken into custody, according to ABC News Australia.
Local police and Protective Service Officers were called to the station at approximately 7:10 p.m. on Sunday following reports of a man in a highly agitated state. According to police, upon arrival, officers discovered that he was armed with a knife.
Police said the man was walking through the station concourse and then stepped onto the tracks near the platform. The area was cordoned off, train service was suspended, and officers attempted to negotiate with him. Police also reported that the man moved toward the officers with a knife.

According to the police, officers attempted to use non-lethal tactical measures to subdue the man. After the critical incident response team arrived, he was taken into custody, but he soon stopped responding. Emergency medical technicians immediately provided him with medical care, but they were unable to save him.
Detectives from the Homicide Division will investigate the incident under the supervision of the Professional Standards Command. On Monday morning, train service on the Cranborne and Pakenham lines remained suspended, and trains were replaced by buses between Oakley and Westall stations.
