The number of unemployed people has risen sharply in Moscow and Russia's major regions
In Russia’s major regions, the number of unemployed has begun to rise amid a deteriorating economic situation. As of the end of the second quarter of 2026, 98,000 people were unemployed in Moscow—70% more than a year earlier.
In the Moscow Region, the number of officially unemployed rose to 88,500 (+36%); in the Sverdlovsk Region, to 56,800 (+84%); in the Chelyabinsk Region, to 36,700 (+26%); and in Primorsky Krai—to 23,300 (+30%). Overall, rising unemployment was recorded in more than 20 regions of the Russian Federation.
Experts attribute this trend to the difficult situation facing Russian companies, which are trying to cut costs and increase labor productivity.
