Death toll from floods in Nepal rises to 1,050
In Nepal, the death toll from devastating flash floods had reached 1,050 people as of September 1. Nearly 4,000 people are considered missing, The Hindu International reports, citing Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
Search and rescue operation
According to the authorities, security force personnel found new bodies in eight districts of the country. Search operations are being complicated by intermittent rainfall and a new flood warning due to rising water levels in rivers in eastern, central and western parts of Nepal.
Among the nearly 4,000 missing people are 583 foreigners and 83 security force personnel. About 12,000 people have been rescued, the authority said.

Statements on climate risks
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah said that the devastating flood that swept through Rasuwa last week via the Bhotekoshi River near the border with Tibet was caused by climate change. According to him, climate change is a global phenomenon, so disaster response also requires global responsibility.
Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal called the devastating glacier collapse that caused the floods a “warning signal” about the risks of climate change for the Himalayan country.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said that 163 Indian citizens had been rescued in Nepal following the floods. The country continues to provide humanitarian and rescue assistance in coordination with Nepalese authorities. In particular, a 19-member specialized forensic team from India began work in Kathmandu on August 30, and a team was deployed in Nepal for tunnel rescue operations.
