Former Chief Justice Rana detained in Nepal — Kathmandu Post

In Kathmandu, Nepal, police detained former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana. According to the Kathmandu Post, he was detained on Sunday at his residence in the Maharajgunj area.

Detention in Kathmandu

Rana's detention was confirmed by the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office. A senior police source also confirmed that law enforcement officers detained him at his residence in Maharajgunj. Details of the detention were not immediately available at the time of reporting.

Impeachment and court ruling

Cholendra Shumsher Rana assumed the position of Chief Justice on January 1, 2019. On February 13, 2022, an impeachment motion against him was registered in parliament, after which Rana was suspended from office.

The motion remained under consideration in parliament for a long time. After the parliamentary session ended, the then secretary-general of the Federal Parliament Secretariat sent a letter declaring the impeachment procedure inactive. This letter was challenged in the Supreme Court.

On September 9, the Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court ruled that the impeachment motion against Rana had become moot and dismissed four petitions in the case. The ruling was issued by a four-judge bench led by Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma.
