A yet-to-be-published book about Princess Diana was stolen in the Netherlands
Four copies of Earl Spencer’s unpublished book about his sister, Princess Diana, were stolen in the Netherlands. The book in question is the Dutch edition of “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” which is scheduled for worldwide release on Tuesday. The copies were being transported from the printing plant to the publisher’s warehouse.
According to the BBC, at the time of the theft, the truck driver was on a mandatory break and was sleeping in the cab. The exact location of the incident has not been disclosed, but Dutch police have confirmed that they are aware of the incident and are investigating.
The Daily Mail was the first to report on the theft and has also published excerpts from the book. According to the publication, the incident occurred earlier this week in a rural area of the Netherlands.
In his new book, Earl Spencer recounts Diana’s life from his perspective. He previously explained that he decided to write his own memoirs ahead of the 30th anniversary of her death because he did not want to see only other people’s interpretations of her life once again.
“The purpose of this book is to tell the truth about Diana from her brother’s perspective, just as I tried to do when I spoke at her funeral,” Spencer said.
He also emphasized that he wants to speak about his sister “openly and positively.” During Diana’s funeral at Westminster Abbey in September 1997, Spencer called her “the very essence of compassion, duty, style, and beauty.”
“Throughout the world, she was a symbol of selfless humanity… a champion of the rights of those who were truly oppressed,” he said at the time.
In that same speech, Diana’s brother sharply criticized the press, calling the princess “the most hounded person of our time,” and also promised to protect her sons, William and Harry, from similar pressure.
As a reminder, Princess Diana died in 1997 as a result of a car accident in Paris at the age of 36. Her sons were 15 and 12 at the time. A similar incident involving the premature release of a royal memoir occurred in 2023, when Prince Harry’s book *Spare* was accidentally put on sale in Spain a few days before its official global release.
