AfD reaches 30% in nationwide German poll for the first time
In Germany, support for the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has reached 30% for the first time in the nationwide GMS poll. This is 10 percentage points more than the conservative CDU/CSU bloc of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, which received 20%.
As Anadolu Agency reports, the CDU/CSU result was the lowest recorded by the GMS polling service. Since the end of July, support for AfD has risen by 2 points, while the conservative bloc's rating has fallen by 3 points.
Distribution of party support
The Social Democratic Party of Germany, which is part of the coalition with the CDU/CSU, has 11% support. With such results, the coalition would not have sufficient support to form a parliamentary majority if elections were held this week.

Support for the Greens rose by 1 point to 14%, while the Left Party also gained 1 point and has 11%. The Free Democratic Party received 4%, and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance received 3%. Both political forces remain below the 5% threshold for entering parliament.
Ahead of state elections
The poll results were released ahead of elections in the states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin, which are due to take place on Sunday. They are also seen as a test of Merz's political future after the conservatives' defeat by AfD in Saxony-Anhalt, where the right-wing party received 43.8% of the vote on September 6.
In the federal elections on February 23, 2025, the CDU/CSU bloc won 28.5%, while AfD received 20.8%. German media have reported in recent weeks about a possible change of chancellor; Hendrik Wüst, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, was named among Merz's potential successors. At the same time, changing the leader of the Christian Democrats alone would not mean dissolving the Bundestag or holding early elections, as parliament can elect a new chancellor.
