Attack on officers in April
In April, Sergeant Mandla Huzwayo and Captain Louis Nel were travelling in an unmarked government vehicle when unknown armed men opened fire on them. The law enforcement officers attempted to escape a group of at least five men armed with high-calibre weapons and drove several kilometres along Flanders Drive in Mount Edgecombe, KwaZulu-Natal province.
According to KwaZulu-Natal acting deputy police commissioner Major General Anthony Gopaul, at least two suspects were in the front part of the pickup truck, while about three with rifles were in the back. When the officers' Toyota Hilux stopped at a slight bend in the road, the suspects reportedly fired at the windscreen. Nel was killed at the wheel, while the seriously wounded Huzwayo was airlifted to hospital, where he died from his injuries.
