A debate has begun in the U.S. over a package of severe sanctions against Russia
Debates have officially begun in the U.S. Senate on a bill to impose a new package of tough sanctions against Russia and Iran. A final vote on the bill could take place as early as August 7, according to RFE/RL correspondent Alex Raufoglu.
The bill would significantly increase the cost of trade with Moscow. Specifically, it proposes imposing a 500% tariff on imports of Russian energy resources and coal into the U.S.
In addition, countries that purchase Russian oil and gas or help circumvent sanctions restrictions could face secondary tariffs of 100%.
The proposed measures could remain in effect for five years. Their goal is to increase economic pressure on Russia and limit Moscow’s ability to finance the war.

As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting on sanctions against Russia and instructed officials to prepare a plan for a special sanctions operation. According to him, it should significantly restrict the operations of the Russian military-industrial complex and prevent Moscow from quickly adapting to the new restrictions.
On August 6, the United Kingdom expanded its sanctions against Russia, adding 19 new items to the list. The restrictions target Russian banks, energy and industrial companies, as well as tankers that transported oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas, thereby supporting Russia’s military economy.
