In the U.S., a woman marries the brother of the donor who saved her life
In the U.S., 24-year-old Brooklyn Dotson is preparing to marry Noah Waters—the younger brother of Michael, whose death more than 20 years ago gave her a chance at life.
Brooklyn was born with a genetic disorder—alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a protein that protects tissues, particularly the liver and lungs, from the harmful effects of enzymes. As a child, her condition was critical, and doctors warned that without a transplant, she might only live a few days.
The girl waited months for a suitable donor while her health continued to deteriorate. In December 2003, when Brooklyn was about a year and a half old, doctors found the necessary organ and transplanted a liver into her.
The donor was 10-year-old Michael Waters, who had been struck by a car. The boy had a hearing impairment. According to his parents, he likely did not hear the car when he stepped out onto the street near a friend’s house.
Michael’s mother, Tina Potit, remembered her son as an exceptionally generous child. He often shared his lunch with children who had nothing to eat and gave away his belongings to those who needed them.
Two years before the tragedy, Michael had learned about the possibility of posthumous organ donation. He told his parents that he would like to donate his organs if anything happened to him. That is why it was easier for the family to agree to the transplant after his death.
After the surgery, Brooklyn, the donor’s family, and the recipient’s family wanted to meet each other. Since then, they have stayed in touch and met every year.
Brooklyn quickly became friends with Michael’s younger brother, Noah. As adults, they both had their own lives and romantic relationships, but eventually their friendship blossomed into love.
On Christmas, Noah proposed to Brooklyn. The couple is now preparing for their wedding, which is scheduled for late September.
