In the United States, journalists from CNN, Politico and MS NOW were denied access to the White House hours after a federal judge temporarily restored their access. Some media employees had their credentials confiscated, while other representatives of the same outlets were allowed to enter, BBC News reports.

Federal judge's ruling

Judge Timothy Kelly issued the ruling early Thursday morning. He found that President Donald Trump's ban on media access likely violated their constitutional rights to due process.

Trump initially said he had decided to ban these media outlets from access because they spread “fake news.” Later, the White House cited national security as the basis for restricting access.

Lawyers for the outlets filed a motion for an emergency court hearing. They said the White House had “repeatedly violated” the court ruling restoring press access. The White House has not yet commented on the order, and the president's lawyers may take further legal action.

Who was denied entry

CNN reported that several of its journalists, including senior correspondent Betsy Klein, were denied entry to the White House. At the same time, one of the network's producers was allowed in.

Politico said one of its reporters was denied access and had their press credential confiscated. According to MS NOW, White House correspondent Laura Barrón-López and a producer were denied entry to the White House and had their passes taken away, while another MS NOW producer was allowed in.

According to the BBC's assessment, the situation could affect television coverage of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the White House, where a state dinner is planned.
