Six-metre image of the Sun to be installed in UK market hall

In the town of Goole in East Yorkshire, United Kingdom, the Helios art installation depicting the Sun will be displayed at the renovated Goole Market Hall from September 25 to October 5. This was reported by Asharq Al-Awsat, citing the BBC.

Six-metre installation

Helios was created by artist Luke Jerram. The diameter of the internally illuminated installation is 19 feet, or about six metres. The work was named after Helios, the ancient Greek god who personified the Sun.

More than 400,000 high-resolution photographs of the Sun’s surface, as well as NASA observation data, were used to create the object. The installation is touring the United Kingdom and has already drawn large crowds of visitors, said Nick Coltish, East Yorkshire Council’s culture, leisure and tourism portfolio holder.

Programme for the town’s 200th anniversary

The display of Helios will be part of the Goole 200 programme, dedicated to the town’s 200th anniversary. According to Coltish, the restored market hall will become a venue for exhibiting an internationally renowned work.

The installation’s visit to Goole was made possible with financial support from Arts Council England. During its display, the Goole 2026 Bicentenary Group, which includes East Yorkshire Council and community partners, will hold the Around the Sun programme. It includes an inflatable dome at Junction Goole for learning about the Solar System and a concert combining classical and electronic music with NASA recordings.
