Possible human remains were found in Lake Mead in the United States

Possible human remains were discovered on Boulder Beach at Lake Mead Reservoir in Nevada. Among the items found was a jawbone with teeth, but the incident is still under investigation. BBC News reported this, citing the U.S. National Park Service.

A report of apparent skeletal remains was received on August 16. Rangers from the U.S. National Park Service and officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene. The agency stated that no further information is being provided at this time.

The bones were spotted by two visitors on the Nevada side of the body of water, located on the border between Nevada and Arizona. Visitor Dianelis Molina Cruz told KLAS TV that her friend was sifting through rocks in the water, picked up a jawbone, and saw teeth attached to it.

The water level at Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the U.S., has been falling since 2000. According to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, last week it dropped to 1,040 feet, or 316 meters, above sea level—significantly below the previous record low set in July 2022. Most of Clark County, where the reservoir is located, is in a moderate drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

BBC News notes that prolonged hot weather is causing water levels in rivers and lakes to drop in various countries, sometimes leading to unexpected discoveries. In early August, the bodies of two German soldiers from World War II were recovered from the Danube in Budapest; a largely intact motorcycle belonging to the German Wehrmacht was found nearby.
