In India, a 97-year-old woman was rescued from the floodwaters on a makeshift raft made of banana trunks
In the flooded village of Charing in the Indian state of Assam, 40-year-old Bornali Barua and her husband rescued his 97-year-old mother, Lokada Duara, who is unable to move on her own. When water began rapidly flooding their home on the night of July 20, and there were no rescuers or boats nearby, the couple built a raft out of banana trunks.
After placing the elderly woman on the raft, they spent about an hour battling strong currents and water up to 1.2 meters deep to reach temporary shelter.
In total, the massive disaster in Assam claimed the lives of at least 100 people and affected about 1.2 million residents. The water in the family’s home rose to 1.5 meters, destroying the Barua family’s farm—the woman lost most of her livestock and poultry, as well as her belongings. Despite the extensive damage, the family has returned to the village and plans to rebuild their home with a higher foundation to prepare for possible future flooding.
