Iran executed 1,639 people last year, the highest number since 1989

At least 1,639 people were executed in Iran in 2025, the highest number since 1989.

This was reported by AFP.

According to the human rights organizations Iran Human Rights and Together Against the Death Penalty, the number of executions rose by 68% compared to 2024.

Among those executed were at least 48 women, the highest number in over 20 years.

Nearly half of those executed were convicted of drug-related crimes.

Most executions were carried out by hanging in prisons, but the number of public executions more than tripled—to 11.

Human rights activists note that the authorities are using death sentences as a tool for intimidation and to suppress protests.

At the same time, hundreds of detained protesters also face the death penalty.

Iran announced that negotiations with the U.S. have moved to the expert level

The US announced the start of demining operations in the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, US warships have passed through the strait for the first time since the start of the war without Iran’s approval.

Negotiations between the US and Iran have begun to move forward. Tehran stated that Washington has allegedly agreed to unfreeze a portion of Iranian assets, but there has been no official confirmation from the American side yet.
