In Spain, 1,028 deaths directly linked to extreme weather conditions were recorded in June.

The heatwave that swept across the country caused the highest number of deaths for this month since 2015.

“The Spanish Institute of Health named after Carlos III reported that at least 1,028 heat-related deaths were recorded last month,” the statement said.

This figure was more than twice as high as the statistics for the same period last year.

The peak of the heatwave occurred on June 23, when 35.7 million people in Spain were affected by the extreme temperatures.

This represents approximately 73% of the country’s total population, underscoring the scale and severity of the weather event.

Spain’s National Meteorological Agency (Aemet) classified June as “exceptionally warm” and recorded the second-highest temperature on record.

The average air temperature on the mainland reached 23.2 °C, exceeding the 1991–2020 climate norm by 3.2 °C.

In addition, June 22 and 23 went down in meteorological history as the two hottest days in June since 1950.

The Aemet agency described this episode as “exceptional” due to its unprecedented intensity, prolonged duration, and wide geographic scope, particularly in the northern regions of the country.

The long-term trends in weather patterns, as indicated by experts’ data, are also cause for concern.

While only two heat waves were recorded in Spain between 1975 and 2000, their number has risen to ten over the past 25 years, from 2000 to 2025.
