Spain is investigating a possible attack on a killer whale in the Strait of Gibraltar
Spain’s Ministry of Ecology has launched an investigation after the orca Toní was spotted in the Strait of Gibraltar with marks on her dorsal fin. The ministry stated that these marks are consistent with shots from an air gun. Tonii is the oldest living member of her group of Iberian orcas, according to The Guardian.
A source at the Spanish ministry told the newspaper El País that some of the pellets may have remained in the animal’s fin, posing a risk of infection. Spanish authorities are also in contact with Portuguese officials: the injuries were noticed after the orcas swam in from waters near the Portuguese city of Faro.
The WeWhale Association and Iberian Orca Guardians are monitoring Tonya’s condition, particularly for any signs of weakness. Janek Andre, co-founder of Iberian Orca Guardians, stated that the organization had seen this orca several weeks ago and that she had no wounds at that time. He emphasized that if someone had intentionally shot the animal, it would be an act of cruelty toward a member of a population that is critically endangered.

Iberian orcas attracted attention in 2020 due to their interactions with vessels near the Iberian Peninsula. A small group of these animals was linked to damage to dozens of vessels and the sinking of at least four boats. Scientists do not support claims of deliberate attacks by the orcas, suggesting that such behavior may be play or a way to practice hunting skills.
The Iberian orca population numbers between 30 and 40 individuals. Researchers note that the animals, which inhabit a major shipping route, suffer from food shortages, injuries, and pollution. In 2023, a video also surfaced showing people setting off firecrackers into the sea while orcas were pushing the rudder of their boat.
