Woman drowns in car trapped by water in Italian underpass — ANSA English

In the town of Latisana in northeastern Italy, a woman drowned in her car after it became trapped by water in an underpass during severe storms and flooding. A Carabinieri officer dived into the water in an attempt to save her and managed to pull the woman from the car, but it was already too late. The officer subsequently required treatment at a hospital, ANSA English reports.

Disruptions to train services

The bad weather, which had already affected rail services in some areas of northern Italy the previous day, caused significant disruptions on September 10. In the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where Latisana is located, many services were cancelled or delayed by up to an hour.

In the town of Cataeggio near Sondrio, around 45 people were evacuated from their homes due to a landslide caused by extreme weather. Schools were also closed there.

Impact of storms in the regions

In Tuscany, more than 63,000 lightning strikes were recorded over 12 nighttime hours. Heavy rain flooded parts of the Civili hospital in Brescia. In the Adriatic region of Marche, firefighters carried out more than 100 callouts related to building safety, as well as fallen trees and branches.

Scientists link more frequent and intense extreme weather events, including heatwaves, droughts, severe storms and flooding, to the climate crisis caused by greenhouse gas emissions resulting from human activity.
