Video: A massive fire broke out at a warehouse in Vladivostok
On the night of July 31, a major fire broke out at a warehouse complex belonging to the DNS chain in Vladivostok, Russia. By the time emergency responders arrived, the fire had already engulfed a significant area, and a thick column of black smoke rose above the scene. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that the fire department received a call about the fire on the night of July 31. By the time emergency crews arrived, thick black smoke was rising from the warehouse and could be seen from various parts of the city. Twenty-two firefighters and seven pieces of specialized equipment were deployed to extinguish the fire.
“The fire and rescue service received a report of a fire at a warehouse on Dniprovska Street. According to preliminary data, the fire covers an area of approximately 1,000 square meters, and thick black smoke is visible,” the ministry said in a statement.
Initially, Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations reported a fire at a warehouse building without specifying its owner. However, a correspondent for the Russian state news agency TASS later reported that the fire occurred specifically at a DNS warehouse. This is not a typical store, but a “Technopoint” format—a large warehouse-style store where household and digital appliances are stored in their original packaging on multi-tiered shelves. According to the company itself, such warehouse complexes can hold several times more goods than the chain’s largest hypermarkets.
According to local media reports, the warehouse may have contained large shipments of refrigerators, televisions, washing machines, smartphones, computers, components, and tools, as well as goods that had already been paid for by customers and were awaiting pickup.
According to preliminary estimates, potential losses could amount to hundreds of millions of rubles. According to publicly available financial statements, the total value of DNS’s inventory across Russia exceeds 272 billion rubles, and the average value of goods at a single retail location exceeds 100 million rubles. For large warehouse complexes, this figure may be significantly higher. At the same time, DNS has not yet released an official estimate of the losses incurred.
Incidentally, the Primorsky Krai branch of Rospotrebnadzor has recommended that residents keep their windows closed to minimize the entry of combustion products into their homes.
Experts have begun collecting atmospheric air samples in residential neighborhoods near the fire site and are conducting rapid measurements of pollution levels. Until the test results are available, residents are advised to spend as little time as possible outdoors and avoid strenuous physical activity; people with chronic illnesses, the elderly, and children are recommended to wear protective masks or respirators.
Rospotrebnadzor also urged people to seek medical attention if they experience a cough, a sore throat, burning eyes, dizziness, or other symptoms that may be related to smoke inhalation. As of this writing, the results of air quality tests and the cause of the fire had not yet been officially released.
