On Saturday, September 26, deliberate damage to railway cables in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia caused disruptions to train service. The incident caused delays on intercity routes, and some trains had to be rerouted.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the affected routes include those from Dortmund to Munich, from Hamburg to Basel, and from northern Germany to Cologne.

The Zuginfo.nrw information portal reports that the entire Gelsenkirchen metropolitan area is currently impassable. It is not yet known how long the repair work will take.

A police spokesperson said an investigation is underway into the suspected theft of cables along the railroad line in the Gelsenkirchen-Jückendorf area, where signaling and control systems have failed.

It is believed that the thieves roughly cut and ripped out cables along the tracks in several places. The police were notified of this at approximately 5 a.m. local time.

This was reported by dpa, citing information from the German railway operator Deutsche Bahn.
