A Canberra resident helped save his neighbors, who were asleep during the fire

Tom Freeman, a resident of the Dunlop neighborhood in Canberra, helped evacuate his neighbors from a house where a fire broke out this morning. According to ABC News Australia, the man noticed a fire in the garage of a neighboring home while driving down Paulworth Circuit on his way to work.

Freeman, who works as a butcher, woke up around 5:00 a.m., defrosted his car’s windshield with water, and returned to his house. When he stepped outside again, he noticed a sharp, unusual smell. He decided to investigate the source and saw that the garage of the neighboring house was on fire, with thick smoke billowing from it.

According to Freeman, he began banging urgently on the front door and considered breaking a window. The residents of the house were fast asleep and unaware of the fire in the garage. He also said that by the time he reached the entrance, the front door was almost red-hot.
