Singer Angela Chang paused concert in Chengdu due to worsening health

Taiwanese singer Angela Chang temporarily paused her concert in Chengdu, China, on August 23 due to worsening health, but returned to the stage after a short break and completed the performance. Channel NewsAsia reports.

Help on stage

The 44-year-old artist felt unwell while performing the 2007 hit Doesn't Hurt. Audience members noticed that she repeatedly adjusted her collar and the hem of her skirt, and the concert later had to be paused.

Videos circulating online show medical workers assisting Chang directly on stage: they measured her blood pressure, fanned her, massaged her arm and fitted her with a nasal oxygen cannula. The singer appeared on the venue's large screen with tears in her eyes, along with a message asking for three minutes.

The singer's explanation

After resting, Chang continued the concert. She told the audience that she felt unwell after changing into a heavy costume styled as a carousel. According to her, the heat or the weight of the outfit may have affected how she felt; after putting it on, she felt that her heart was struggling to cope with the strain.

The singer apologized to the audience for the delay and assured them that she would not have continued the performance if she had been unable to do so. Chang had previously spoken about heart problems: in 2008, she was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse, after which she stopped working for several months to undergo treatment in Canada.

That same evening, the artist wrote on Weibo that she is currently fine. She noted that a medical team was present throughout the concert and that she underwent an additional examination after the performance. Chang's next concert is scheduled in Guiyang on August 29.
