Tyler Perry explains Janet Jackson’s absence from new sequel
In Los Angeles, Tyler Perry explained that Janet Jackson did not return for the film Why Did I Get Married Again? because of painful memories connected to the death of her brother Michael Jackson. At first, the singer agreed to take part in the new film and spoke positively about the script, TimesLIVE reports.
During a special screening of the film at the historic Harmony Gold Theatre, Perry said that he contacted all members of the original cast. According to him, he was prepared to work on the continuation only if all the actors returned. Jackson read the script and liked it, but she had a concert residency.
Memories of the 2009 filming
Later, Jackson told Perry that she was not sure whether she could emotionally return to that period of her life. Perry linked these feelings to the filming of Why Did I Get Married Too?, during which Michael Jackson died.

Michael Jackson died in Los Angeles on June 25, 2009, at the age of 50, several days after filming of the sequel began. Production of the film was temporarily halted so Janet Jackson could be with her family. She later returned to the set and completed her work by August 2009. According to Perry, the team supported her at that time.
The role of Patricia Agnew
In the first two films, Jackson played psychologist and author Patricia Agnew. In the sequel, her character goes through a marital crisis with Gavin, played by Malik Yoba. The couple tries to cope with unresolved grief after the death of their child and later decides to divorce.
Perry highly praised Jackson’s work in the second installment and thanked her for supporting the franchise over the years. Why Did I Get Married Again?, available on Netflix, brings back some members of the original cast and introduces new participants, including Taraji P. Henson.
