BYD says it will have an electric vehicle with a solid-state battery in 2027 — InsideEVs

Chinese company BYD plans to have its first electric vehicle model with a solid-state battery in 2027. BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said this in an interview with Carwow.es, InsideEVs reports.

First model with the new technology

According to Li, the company will “have one model” with this technology next year. She also said that BYD holds a leading position in the development of solid-state batteries. At the same time, the top manager did not specify which model would be equipped with the new battery or when it would appear.

It is also unclear whether this refers to a full market launch of the vehicle or a demonstration prototype. The publication notes that Chinese automakers, including BYD, are rapidly introducing new technologies into production models.

Possible Yangwang flagship

CarNewsChina sources claim that the solid-state battery may be used in the recently teased flagship sedan of the Yangwang brand. BYD has not confirmed this information. The InsideEVs author suggests that the expensive technology at an early stage could first be used in a premium model, such as the Denza Z9 or BYD Great Tang.

Solid-state batteries are considered a promising technology for electric vehicles: they may be lighter and safer, have higher energy density, and support faster charging. At the same time, automakers are still working to resolve technological issues and establish mass production of such batteries. Toyota plans to launch an electric vehicle with this technology in 2027 or 2028, while Honda and Mercedes are targeting a period closer to 2030.
