Chery prepares diesel plug-in hybrid Stockman pickup for Australia — InsideEVs

Chinese company Chery is preparing the midsize Stockman pickup with a diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain for the Australian market. The model, which the manufacturer positions as the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid pickup, is set to debut in Australia soon, InsideEVs reports.

Powertrain

The Stockman is to receive a 2.5-liter turbodiesel engine and an electric motor. The claimed combined system output is 469 hp, while maximum torque is 800 Nm.

According to Chery, a 34-kWh battery will provide up to 100 km of electric range under the NEDC cycle. The manufacturer also claims fuel consumption of 2 liters per 100 km, although this figure can only be achieved with a fully charged traction battery.

The company did not disclose exactly how the electric motor is integrated into the powertrain. InsideEVs notes that the claimed electric range under the NEDC cycle roughly corresponds to 73 km under the EPA cycle.

All-wheel drive and equipment

The pickup will have an all-wheel-drive transmission, a solid rear axle, three differential locks and a low-range gear in the transfer case. The maximum claimed trailer weight is 3,500 kg.

The Stockman’s equipment is expected to include heated and ventilated front seats, leather interior trim, dual-zone climate control, an audio system, two large screens and a color head-up display. The V2L function is also announced: the cargo bed will feature two household power outlets supplied by the high-voltage battery.

In Australia, the Chery Stockman is expected to compete with the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton. The gasoline plug-in hybrid BYD Shark 6 pickup is also seeking to establish itself in this segment.
