Ford describes front trunk work surface and fold-down TV in patent — Motor1

In the United States, Ford Global Technologies filed document No. 12,741,514 on September 22, 2026, describing an electrified pickup truck with a front cargo compartment that can be transformed into a large flat work surface. This is reported by Motor1.

Front compartment as a second tailgate

The patent is titled “Vehicle Cargo Space Access Providing Method.” It views the front luggage compartment not as an enclosed niche, but as a structure similar to a pickup truck’s fold-down tailgate. Once opened, it can form a level surface for loading equipment or setting up a workspace.

The documentation also provides for the possibility of replacing the upper part of the hood area: the owner could choose metal or polymer panels depending on the conditions of use. It also separately describes a positioning system in which sensors check the available space before moving the vehicle to another location for more convenient access to the cargo area.

Screen in the rear cargo area

The drawings in the same patent also show a rear cargo compartment with a lower section that can serve as a horizontal surface. This part of the design includes a television that is stored in a folded position when the compartment is closed and lowers for viewing.

The patent does not mention Ford Fathom, although an electrified pickup truck is used as an example. The document does not confirm that the described solutions will appear on production vehicles: the patent covers an electrified vehicle in general terms.
