General Motors may equip the 2027 model-year Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups with an updated 2.7-liter L4B TurboMax four-cylinder turbo engine producing 350 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque, or about 617 Nm. Motor1 reports, citing GM documents and information from vehicle order guides.

Output of the new engine

According to the publication, the L4B is set to replace the L3B TurboMax engine used in the current Colorado and Canyon. The L3B develops 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. Thus, the stated output of the new unit will be higher by 40 hp and 25 lb-ft, or approximately 34 Nm.

In GM's September powertrain guide, the updated TurboMax is listed with ratings of 350 hp and 455 lb-ft for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. At the same time, order-guide data link the same specifications to the midsize Colorado and Canyon, for which the L4B engine code is listed. According to another specialized publication, maximum power is reached at 5,200 rpm, while peak torque is reached at 3,000 rpm.

Design and towing

According to GM engineering materials, the performance increase is associated with a new turbocharger, a revised fuel-injection system, an updated active thermal-management system, and redesigned pistons. Full-size Silverado and Sierra models have already received a similar powertrain update.

Reports based on GM documentation indicate a maximum trailer weight of about 7,700 lb, or nearly 3,493 kg, for properly equipped Colorado and Canyon models. This matches the figure for the previous-generation models. GM has not yet released detailed towing-capacity and payload data for each version of the 2027 pickups.
