GM is not bringing CarPlay back to gasoline models — The Verge
General Motors has announced an updated software interface for future Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, featuring a new design for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This led to speculation that the automaker was allegedly bringing smartphone interface projection systems back to its vehicles, but the changes do not apply to electric vehicles.
CarPlay remained in internal-combustion models
As The Verge reports, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto had not disappeared from many of GM's gasoline-powered pickups and SUVs. Therefore, the introduction of the new interface for the Silverado and Sierra does not mean a change in the company's position on supporting these systems across its entire lineup.
Confusion arose after some media outlets described the announcement as a reversal or concession by GM regarding CarPlay and Android Auto. At the same time, the manufacturer has not offered smartphone interface projection in its electric vehicles since 2023.

GM electric vehicles use Google services
For the past three years, CarPlay and Android Auto have not been offered in the electric Chevrolet Equinox, Blazer, Bolt and Silverado EV, Cadillac Lyriq, Optiq, Vistiq and Escalade IQ, as well as the GMC Sierra, Hummer SUV and Hummer Truck EV.
These vehicles use built-in Google software products, including Maps and Gemini. GM's operating system is based on Android Automotive; in the version with a full set of built-in apps, it is also called Google Automotive Services. Owners of such electric vehicles cannot connect a smartphone by cable or wirelessly to display the familiar Apple CarPlay or Android Auto interface on the infotainment system screen.
