Mazda discusses new Chinese-made electric vehicles — Motor1

Mazda has begun discussions with its Chinese partner Changan about the possibility of introducing additional Chinese-made electric vehicles. The Japanese automaker already sells the China-built Mazda 6e and CX-6e in export markets, Motor1 reports.

Mazda Australia director Vinesh Bhindi confirmed that the company is exploring an expansion of its cooperation with Changan beyond the current electric liftback and crossover. Asked whether Mazda would rely on Changan in electric vehicle development alongside its own battery-electric vehicle program, he answered affirmatively.

Two more models by 2030

Mazda's corporate plan already provides for two additional models based on the joint venture with Changan in 2028–2030. The company has also stated that electric vehicles manufactured by Changan are part of its strategy to expand exports beyond China.

According to Bhindi, future China-made models will not simply be Changan vehicles with Mazda badges: the company will continue working to ensure they are differentiated. The plant in Nanjing operates as a Mazda facility within the joint venture, while the brand's European team is working on tuning the vehicles' driving characteristics.

Mazda's own electric program

Mazda is targeting 2029 for its own dedicated battery-electric vehicles. At the same time, the company is nearly halving investment in electric vehicles and directing more resources toward hybrid models with the new Skyactiv-Z gasoline engine.

Cooperation with Changan allows Mazda to expand its electric lineup more quickly without developing each model independently. This approach also matters for Europe, where automakers must comply with increasingly stringent fleet emissions requirements.
