Recurrent estimated the Tesla Model Y's battery health at 91% after one year of use
The third-party service Recurrent estimated the battery health of a Tesla Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive at 91% of its original capacity after one year of use and approximately 25,000 miles of driving. The data was verified by the EV’s owner, YouTuber Andy Slay, according to InsideEVs.
Sly did not perform a full Tesla battery health test. Such a test requires the car to remain connected to an AC charger for more than 16 hours: the battery must be discharged to nearly zero and then fully recharged. Instead, Tesla’s built-in diagnostics in the app provided a general assessment that the battery is “healthy.”
The 91% rating was provided by Recurrent—a service that assesses battery health based on the car’s data. To calculate this, it analyzes the charge level, projected range, mileage, charging data, and temperature readings, comparing them with data from similar vehicles.

The owner does not consider this assessment a cause for concern. During a previous range test, he drove nearly 300 miles on a full charge, traveling primarily at highway speeds. According to his calculations, charging to 80% daily should provide approximately 240 miles of real-world range.
Slay mostly charged the car at home and only occasionally used Supercharger stations. Tesla spent its first year in Kentucky, rather than in an area with a consistently hot climate, which can accelerate battery degradation. According to Voltest’s estimates, for long-range Teslas with nickel-based batteries, a battery state of charge (SOC) of around 90% can serve as a benchmark for initial degradation over the first two to three years or 50,000 miles of driving, after which the rate of degradation typically slows down.
