Rolls-Royce narrows the gap with Bentley in global sales

Rolls-Royce has gradually narrowed the gap with Bentley in terms of global sales: last year, 1.8 Bentley vehicles were sold for every Rolls-Royce. In 2003, Bentley sold 1,017 cars worldwide — approximately 3.4 times more than Rolls-Royce, Motor1 reports.

Changing brand positioning

According to the publication, Rolls-Royce is increasingly moving into the upper segment of the luxury market in terms of exclusivity and prices. Motor1 cites the Cullinan and Phantom as examples of this positioning. Bentley, meanwhile, sells more vehicles overall and has a broader model range that is generally more affordable within the luxury segment.

In 2007, Rolls-Royce exceeded 1,000 delivered vehicles for the first time, while Bentley surpassed 10,000 cars. In 2011, Bentley sold 7,003 vehicles, while Rolls-Royce delivered 3,538. By 2019, the ratio had narrowed to 2.3 Bentley vehicles for every Rolls-Royce; both brands ended that year with record sales.

Impact of SUVs and an electric vehicle

The brands' momentum was affected by the expansion of their model lines beyond traditional luxury sedans. Bentley introduced the Bentayga in 2015, while Rolls-Royce launched the Cullinan in 2018. According to Motor1, the Cullinan became one of the most successful vehicles in Rolls-Royce history and played an important role in the brand's growth amid demand for expensive SUVs.

The publication also notes the role of the Spectre, Rolls-Royce's first fully electric model. Bentley is part of Volkswagen Group and must take into account financial pressure, electrification costs, regulatory changes and other challenges affecting the parent group. Rolls-Royce operates as part of BMW.
