Scania offers an electric tractor unit with a range of up to 720 km — InsideEVs
Swedish company Scania has offered a new configuration of an electric tractor unit with a claimed range of up to 720 kilometers on a single charge. The solution involves installing additional battery modules behind the cab, reports InsideEVs.
Additional batteries behind the cab
The new batteries can add up to 356 kWh of energy capacity. They work together with the standard battery packs located on the chassis. According to Scania, this makes it possible to use electric trucks on long-distance routes where electrification had previously been more difficult, considering range, payload capacity and charging capabilities.
The company also unveiled an extended Increased Vehicle Dimension cab optimized for aerodynamics. According to the manufacturer, the new design can reduce energy consumption by up to 3% compared with a conventional cab. A 6x2 tractor unit with additional batteries and a longer cab can tow a two-axle European trailer even if the total length of the road train exceeds 16.5 meters.

Charging at up to 750 kW
The new version supports MCS charging at up to 750 kW. CCS charging at up to 375 kW is also available. The claimed range of the new Scania is 106 miles, or about 171 kilometers, greater than that of the European version of the Tesla Semi mentioned by the publication.
Lars Gustafsson, Senior Vice President and head of Solutions Management at Scania, said that the change in battery placement is intended to enable electric transport on long-distance routes. At the same time, the additional batteries increase the vehicle's weight, so its payload capacity will be lower than that of lighter versions with a shorter range. Scania did not disclose the exact payload capacity of the new modification.
InsideEVs also notes that the new-generation MAN eTGX electric truck, also produced by the Volkswagen Group, has a claimed range of up to 720 kilometers. Its usable energy capacity is 616 kWh, and its wheel configuration is 6x2.
