Tesla Cybertruck gets home backup power function
Tesla has begun rolling out the Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) function for owners of the Cybertruck electric pickup, allowing the energy from the vehicle's high-voltage battery to be used for backup power for a home during electricity outages. The function works through the home Powerwall 3 system, InsideEVs reports.
System operating conditions
Tesla calls this capability Powershare Home Backup. It is currently available to homeowners with a Powerwall 3 installed — Tesla's newest stationary energy storage system. A Tesla Wall Connector home charger is also required to export electricity.
According to Tesla's estimate, connecting a Cybertruck can extend a home's backup power by more than three days. The company equates this energy reserve to nine additional Powerwall systems. Powerwall 3 and the Cybertruck energy export system support up to 11.5 kW of AC power.

Support for other systems
Some Cybertruck owners reported receiving emails from Tesla asking them to complete a survey before enabling the function for their systems. On the official Cybertruck account on X, Tesla also said it plans to add support for older Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ systems by the end of the year.
Cybertruck chief engineer Wes Morrill called Powershare Home Backup a function that combines two energy sources into one system through the same wall connector used for charging. In 2024, Tesla had already released a software update that allowed the Cybertruck to power a home through the Powershare Gateway and Universal Wall Connector. Unlike Powerwall, the Powershare Gateway has no battery of its own and relies solely on the electric pickup's battery.
