Volvo updates XC60 and XC90 hybrids with increased electric range — The Verge
Volvo has unveiled updated plug-in hybrid versions of the XC60 and XC90 crossovers, with claimed all-electric ranges of up to 78 and 73 miles, respectively. As The Verge reports, the Swedish automaker has called these models its first plug-in hybrids with increased range.
Preliminary EPA figures
The claimed figures are more than double the range of the previous plug-in hybrid versions of the XC60 and XC90. At the same time, these figures are preliminary and based on the testing standards of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Volvo says that once the results are confirmed, the XC60 and XC90 will have the longest all-electric range among plug-in hybrids available on the U.S. market.

Larger battery and more powerful motors
Both models received 41.2 kWh batteries, of which 37.9 kWh are available for use. The battery was integrated directly into the vehicles’ floor, following the principle Volvo uses in its fully electric models. According to the company, this should improve the vehicles’ efficiency.
The new batteries can also deliver more energy to the electric motors, which have become more powerful. In addition to the technical changes, the XC60 will receive updated styling in line with Volvo’s new design language.
