Public transportation fares in Kyiv may rise to 20 hryvnias: unions have backed a compromise proposal

The Kyiv City Council of Trade Unions has agreed to a phased increase in public transportation fares in the capital.

Instead of the 30 hryvnias per trip planned by the Kyiv City State Administration, the trade unions propose initially setting the fare at 20 hryvnias and postponing any further increases for at least six months.

According to union representatives, during this time, city authorities should develop compensation mechanisms for public sector employees—including educators, healthcare workers, cultural workers, and other categories.

The unions are also demanding that at least 20% of the additional revenue from the fare increase be allocated to raising salaries for transportation workers, a sector currently facing a severe labor shortage.

At the same time, the education workers’ union has opposed any rate increases until social compensation measures are implemented.

Discussions continue in Kyiv regarding a moratorium on public transportation fare increases. During the most recent session of the Kyiv City Council, some parliamentary factions—“UDAR” and “European Solidarity”—did not support the relevant vote, which effectively complicated the adoption of a decision to maintain current fares.

Klitschko called the 30-hryvnia fare for travel in Kyiv too low.
