A court ordered the arrest of a veteran for protesting the cutting down of oak trees in Teremky
The Holosiivskyi District Court of Kyiv imposed a preventive measure in the form of nighttime house arrest from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. on veteran and civic activist Lyubomyr Dmytryshyn. The decision was made in connection with his participation in a protest against the felling of trees in a park in the Teremky neighborhood of Kyiv, where work on a heating main is underway.
Dmytryshyn was notified of charges under Part 3 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (hooliganism involving resistance to a law enforcement officer), which carries a sentence of up to five years in prison. According to investigators, the activist coordinated the protesters’ actions and provoked a confrontation with the police.
The prosecutor requested round-the-clock detention, while attorney Masi Nayem asked that the suspect be released on his own recognizance; however, the court granted the request only in part. The defense claimed there were violations during the arrest and the seizure of property and is preparing an appeal.
