In Kyiv, metro stations will stay open an hour longer
Starting September 10, the Kyiv Metro will switch to a new schedule. Due to the curfew being shortened, stations will remain open to passengers for an extra hour, and surface public transportation will also operate for longer hours alongside the metro.
Starting September 10, all stations of the Kyiv Metro will continue to operate to serve passengers. The reason is the new curfew hours in the capital. The curfew in Kyiv will now run from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. As a result, the city has adjusted the operating schedule for public transportation, including the metro.
The Kyiv Metro explained that stations will remain open for entry one hour longer. For passengers, this means there will be more time in the evening to use the subway and get home. For example, the “Universytet” metro station currently accepts passengers until 10:38 p.m. Starting September 10, passengers will be able to enter the station until 11:38 p.m. “For example, the ‘Universytet’ metro station, which currently accepts passengers until 10:38 p.m., will be open for entry until 11:38 p.m. starting September 10. Similarly, operating hours will be extended at other metro stations as well,” the Kyiv Metro reported.
What Passengers Should Keep in Mind
The Metro advises passengers to focus specifically on the station’s closing time for entry. This is more important than the departure time of a specific train. In other words, if a passenger manages to enter the station before it closes, they will be able to continue their journey. The schedule was designed so that people who enter the subway before a station closes to new passengers can reach any other station.
“The schedule is designed so that passengers who entered the station before it closed can travel to any other metro station,” the city’s metro system noted. Therefore, passengers using the metro in the evening should not rely solely on the last train listed in the regular schedule. The main thing is to make it to the station before it closes to new passengers.
The metro’s operation as a shelter remains unchanged
At the same time, the extended metro hours for passengers do not mean a change in the rules for using stations as shelters. The Kyiv Metro has specifically emphasized that the operating procedures for underground stations as shelters remain unchanged. The new schedule is directly related to changes in public transportation operations following the reduction of the curfew.
Surface transportation will also operate longer
The changes have affected more than just the metro. Kyivpastrans routes have also begun running longer hours. According to estimates by the civic organization “Passengers of Kyiv,” operating hours have been extended for virtually all routes. On average, they will operate approximately 43 minutes longer, and on some routes, the extension is up to 80 minutes.
At the same time, the departure times for the first buses have not changed. In other words, the morning schedule for passengers remains the same, and the main changes apply specifically to evening routes. “Now, 16 routes will continue operating past 12:30 a.m., a quarter of all routes will run past midnight, and the majority will operate past 11:30 p.m.,” “Passengers of Kyiv” reported.
As a result, Kyiv residents will have more options for getting home by public transit in the evening. This is especially important for those who work or study late into the evening and previously had to adjust their trips to the old schedule. The new rules take effect on September 10. The curfew is in effect from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., and the operating hours of the metro and surface transit have been extended to account for this time frame, according to the Kyiv Metro.
On September 9, Kyiv launched a new operating algorithm for the Syretsko-Pecherska (“green”) metro line on a trial basis during a “yellow” air quality alert. Starting September 10, the new rules are set to remain in effect on a permanent basis.
