Huge traffic jams have formed in Kyiv following the Russian attack: people are walking across the blocked bridges

Major traffic jams formed in Kyiv following Russia’s nighttime attack. Due to the closure of several bridges, travel between the city’s left and right banks has become severely hampered, and some people have been forced to leave their vehicles and walk.

Numerous traffic jams formed in Kyiv on the morning of October 2. The biggest problems arose due to traffic restrictions on bridges following Russia’s nighttime attack. The South Bridge was completely closed in both directions. On the Metro Bridge, traffic has been restricted to a single lane from the left bank to the right, while on the Paton Bridge, traffic from the right bank to the left has been banned.

As a result, cars are literally stuck in long lines at the approaches to the bridges. Traffic jams have formed both on the Left Bank and on the roads leading to the bridges from the Right Bank. The situation is particularly difficult on the main thoroughfares that Kyiv residents typically use to cross the Dnipro. Due to the long delays, some people are abandoning their cars and public transportation and walking certain sections on foot. This is reported by Suspilne correspondents.

Photos released by Suspilne show the situation on the Left Bank of the capital. The roads are congested with traffic, and people are trying to find a way to reach the other side. Drivers aren’t the only ones facing problems. Due to the bridge closures, some public transit routes have had to be rerouted. In particular, buses No. 22 and No. 91, which usually travel across the South Bridge, have been rerouted via the Darnytsia Bridge. Buses No. 51, No. 55, No. 115, and No. 118-D are also being rerouted via the Darnytsia Bridge.

Trolleybuses No. 43 and No. 50 have also temporarily shortened their routes. Bus No. 1-M has resumed service but is running behind schedule. The transportation disruptions were caused by a nighttime attack by the Russian Federation. Russian drones struck the South Bridge several times. The last strike was recorded around 5:00 a.m. on October 2. After that, the bridge was completely closed to traffic.

In the Darnytskyi district, a strike was also recorded on the upper floors of a high-rise residential building. A fire broke out there. According to Suspilne, a drone struck the building on the 24th–25th floors; one person was killed, and two others were injured. In the Holosiivskyi district, debris fell in an open area. Windows of a non-residential building and several cars were damaged. According to preliminary reports, there was no fire and no casualties.

City services continue to work at the impact sites, and traffic across the bridges is gradually being restored. At the same time, drivers and passengers are asked to take restrictions into account and choose alternative routes whenever possible. Currently, the situation on the roads remains challenging. Due to the closed crossings, traffic on other bridges has increased sharply, so trips between the left and right banks may take significantly longer than usual. This is reported by Suspilne correspondents.

As a reminder, the South Bridge in Kyiv remains closed, and metro service on the open section has been suspended.

As a reminder, metro service across the South Bridge in Kyiv may resume during yellow alerts.

Russia may have used a new 40-kilogram warhead during the strike on the South Bridge in Kyiv.
