Metro service in Kyiv was suspended after the Russians launched a second strike on the South Bridge

Metro service in Kyiv was suspended after the Russians launched a second strike on the South Bridge

On the evening of October 1, Russian drones attacked the South Bridge in Kyiv for the second time that day. Following the strike, metro and ground transportation across the bridge were temporarily suspended, and experts began inspecting the structure. Preliminary inspection results showed no critical damage to the bridge itself.

The South Bridge in Kyiv came under attack again from Russian drones on the evening of October 1. This was the second attack on the bridge that day. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that there were two strikes near the bridge’s support structure. Immediately afterward, metro and ground public transit traffic across the bridge was halted. “Currently, metro and ground public transit traffic across the bridge has been halted. Specialists from the Kyivavtoshlyakhmist municipal enterprise are inspecting the condition of the structure following the strikes,” Klitschko said.

After the strikes, experts began inspecting the bridge’s structure and its individual components. Initial reports from city authorities mentioned possible damage in the area of the bridge’s support structure. However, following an initial inspection, specialists from the Kyivavtoshlyakhmist municipal enterprise did not find any critical damage to the structure. Inspections of the metro structures on the South Bridge continued.

Due to the attack, public transportation operations also had to be temporarily adjusted. Trains on the green metro line began running only on underground sections—between the “Syrets”–“Vydubychi” and “Osokorky”–“Chervonyi Khutir” stations. Surface buses No. 22 and No. 91 were temporarily rerouted via the Darnytskyi Railway Bridge. Later, after the structure was inspected, their service across the Pivdennyi Bridge began to resume as usual.

Separately, city authorities reported on the situation involving a subway train that was on the bridge during the attack. Due to the blast wave, dust entered the car through the ventilation system at approximately 11:30 a.m. The passengers and the train operator were unharmed, and the car’s windows and structure were not damaged. The train was sent to the depot for further inspection. Regarding metro service across the South Bridge, city authorities were to provide a separate update after the structural inspection was completed. At that time, the Green Line was operating only on underground sections.

Consequently, following the second attack, the bridge was temporarily closed to traffic so that experts could assess its condition. An initial inspection revealed no critical damage to the bridge itself, but the inspection of the metro structures was ongoing. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported this on Telegram.

In Kyiv, surface public transportation has resumed across the Pivdennyi Bridge following the Russian drone attack on October 1, but the metro is not yet operating. According to preliminary inspection results, experts from the municipal enterprise “Kyivavtoshlyakhmist” found no critical damage to the structure, so buses No. 22 and No. 91 are already operating on their regular routes.
