Four landmark albums released on September 24, 1991 — Rolling Stone

On September 24, 1991, Nirvana's Nevermind, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik, A Tribe Called Quest's The Low End Theory and Pixies' Trompe Le Monde were released on the same day. As Rolling Stone writes, these records significantly influenced the sound of music in the following decade.

Rock, grunge and hip-hop

Nevermind initially debuted at No. 144 on the chart, but topped it within several weeks. The album's success was accompanied by the popularity of the single Smells Like Teen Spirit on radio and MTV. The publication links Nirvana's breakthrough to changes in the music industry, including the emergence of the SoundScan system, which reflected actual record sales more accurately.

During the same period, Pearl Jam's Ten was released on August 27, while Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger was released on October 8. Rolling Stone calls the autumn of 1991 a time when grunge rapidly established itself in mass culture.

Four different musical directions

Red Hot Chili Peppers' album Blood Sugar Sex Magik included the songs Give It Away and Under the Bridge; guitarist John Frusciante took part in the recording. Pixies presented the harsher-sounding Trompe Le Monde, which included, among other tracks, U-Mass and Subbacultcha.

A Tribe Called Quest's The Low End Theory combined jazz rhythms and hip-hop. The publication highlights the track Check the Rhime and views the record as an example of hip-hop's creative diversity amid the popularity of gangsta rap. During the same period, the music scene was also being enriched by releases from Primal Scream, Orbital, Massive Attack, Public Enemy, Cypress Hill and other performers.
