Actor Kyle MacLachlan to release memoir about career and past mistakes — Rolling Stone

Actor Kyle MacLachlan, known for his roles in “Twin Peaks,” “Dune,” and “Blue Velvet,” will release his memoir, Fictional Selves, on September 29. In the book, he describes his path from theater to Hollywood, his collaboration with director David Lynch, and personal experiences, Rolling Stone reports.

The beginning of his career and “Dune”

MacLachlan’s first screen role was Paul Atreides in David Lynch’s 1984 film “Dune.” The actor said he was paid $50,000 for the work, although he had previously worked in theater and earned $185 a week. His first major purchase with the fee was a Jeep worth about $10,000.

According to MacLachlan, after the failure of “Dune,” he gradually realized that the film’s reception had affected how the industry viewed him: people lost interest in him. Lynch later invited him to appear in 1986’s “Blue Velvet.” The actor subsequently also worked on the series “Sex and the City,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Portlandia,” and Fallout.

Collaboration with David Lynch

MacLachlan described returning to the role of Cooper in the third season of “Twin Peaks” in 2017 as difficult, exciting, and unsettling. He doubted whether he could play the character again after a break of more than 25 years, but relied on his work with Lynch.

The actor also said that Lynch’s death was a shock to him. According to MacLachlan, the director remains an important part of his memories, and when he meets with Laura Dern and Isabella Rossellini, they remember Lynch and laugh a great deal.

In the interview, MacLachlan confirmed that while working on “Twin Peaks,” he cheated on Laura Dern with Lara Flynn Boyle. He said that he and Dern became close friends over time, and that reconciliation required maturity and forgiveness.

Speaking about the memoir, the actor said it was important for him to honestly describe his own experience rather than tell only about the positive moments of his career.
